Scenography
For its 70th anniversary, the Québec Winter Carnival unveiled a grand and spectacular installation, a distinctive new emblem of the Quebec City landscape alongside Bonhomme.
The megastructure is designed for beginner to intermediate ice climbers. The design team developed the initial vision of a giant polar bear following an intensive creative process. The process combined storytelling with a search for innovative materials and solutions, in collaboration with engineers, operators, and manufacturers. This new landmark in the city allows the development of a second festival site, promoting physical activity for all.
Conceptual choices
Nanouk's seated posture gives the polar bear an approachable look and hides the installation's anchors. Its faceted, openwork aesthetic allows for light displays reminiscent of the northern lights. Projected lighting creates a safe, immersive atmosphere.
The creation of a "winter beach" setting reinforces the thematic contrast, subtly calling attention to climate change.
Technical choices
The modular design can be completely disassembled for easy handling. The bear's orientation can change with each edition.
The main aluminum structure is lightweight, durable, and recyclable. The panels were cut digitally to ensure high precision faceting.
Challenges
- Tight three-month lead times for design and engineering
- Severe winter weather conditions for installation
- Complex technical parameters of a 45-foot installation for which complete disassembly must also be possible
- Durability of an efficient, high-quality structure for reuse over 10 years
- Adaptability to redesign the legs in wood, rather than ice, to allow the installation to face varying climatic conditions
RESULTS
- The public welcomed Nanouk with huge enthusiasm. In 2024, the Carnival attracted over 450,000 visitors over 18 days
- The excitement was so great that the activation period was extended to 41 days for the next edition.
- Nanouk has received international media coverage, winning several prestigious design awards
